Memorial of the landing of Provence
In Toulon, the Mount Faron Memorial is dedicated to the D-Day landings and the Liberation of Provence, and is one of the Ministry of Defense's 9 national memorial sites.
With an exceptional panorama of the Var coast, the memorial is equipped with the latest advances in historical research and new technologies to immerse visitors in the heart of the Provence landings and the events of the summer of 44.
The Mount Faron Memorial was inaugurated by General de Gaulle on August 15, 1964, to honor the memory of the men and women involved in the D-Day landings and the liberation of Provence. Unlike the Battle of Normandy, which was fought mainly by American troops, it was General de Lattre de Tassigny's B army that was in charge of the two biggest battles of the Provence campaign, Toulon and Marseille. This contribution to the war effort ensured France's role and place in the post-war concert of nations, and the construction of the Mont Faron Memorial is a symbol of national pride - France liberated by itself.
50 years after its opening, President Hollande wanted the Mount Faron Memorial to be given a facelift, to pay a fitting tribute to all those who took part in the event, who came from all walks of life to liberate France: the Free French, the soldiers from Africa, the Resistance fighters and the Allies.
The new museum tour of the Provence landings now boasts 600 m² of exhibition space, featuring 200 collectors' items and numerous multimedia aids to help visitors understand this historic event, which is little-known to the general public.
A place for reflection, transmission and teaching, the memorial also has a room dedicated to hosting educational workshops.
