Île de Porquerolles
Price : 6€
Overlooking the village of Porquerolles, Fort Sainte-Agathe is the island’s oldest fortification. Managed by the Port-Cros National Park, it opens its doors during the season, allowing visitors to explore its historical heritage and exhibitions on their own. An accessible visit to learn about the history and landscapes of Porquerolles.
Detailed program
Fort Sainte-Agathe has occupied a strategic position since ancient times, allowing for surveillance of the Hyères harbor and protection of the village against incursions and banditry. In 1531, King Francis I reinforced the fort and established a garrison on the island to defend the Provençal coastline.
Behind its walls, nearly 4 meters thick, the tower houses a vast domed vaulted hall, lit by an oculus. The terrace at the top offers an exceptional panoramic view of Porquerolles and the harbor.
The former barracks now house a permanent exhibition dedicated to the island’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage. Since 2020, a partnership with Villa Carmignac has enabled the restoration of the tower, which hosts an expansion of its exhibition each year. Visitors can explore the site at their own pace.
