European Heritage Days 2026: Fort Sainte-Agathe

On September 19 and 20, come visit Fort Sainte-Agathe for free.

Since ancient times, its remarkable location has allowed for the simultaneous surveillance of the Hyères harbor and a wide area around the village, which it protected from Saracen raids and banditry of all kinds. In 1531, while passing through Provence, King Francis I decided to reinforce the original structure and establish a garrison on the island of Porquerolles to protect the inhabitants and the Provençal coastline.

Behind walls 4 meters thick, the tower houses a large, 6-meter-high room with a domed vault and an oculus. It is topped by a terrace offering an exceptional view of the island and the Hyères harbor.
The barracks house a permanent exhibition on the island’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage.
