The Fort de la Repentance is an underground defensive structure. Completed in 1893, this formidable battery—comprising two separate structures—allowed its occupants to defend the strait. It played an essential role in the island’s defense.
Since 1995, an Orthodox monastic community established by the National Park has been carrying out restoration work on the fort. It has been renamed “Saint Mary of the Desert Monastery.” Dedicated to Saint Mary of Egypt, this hermitage is a dependency of the Monastery of Saint Anthony the Great (Drôme).
