Discover the history of writing and the origins of the Greek alphabet at the archaeological site of Olbia. This workshop gives children the chance to learn about ancient writing by creating their own inscription on an ostrakon, just like the people of antiquity.

The program

Participants learn how writing originated and how the Greek alphabet developed in ancient times.

To put themselves in the shoes of Olbia’s inhabitants, they then learn to write their first names in Greek on an ostrakon, a pottery shard that was once used as a writing surface. This activity combines historical discovery, hands-on learning, and creativity.
