Europe’s first national marine park
Created on December 14, 1963, the national park, whose core areas of Port-Cros and Porquerolles cover 1,700 hectares of land and 2,900 hectares of sea, is one of the two oldest national parks in France. It is a pioneer among marine parks in Europe. Its historical heritage is considerable, including Roman ruins, around thirty shipwrecks, and some twenty military forts.

The national park, guardian of biodiversity
Port-Cros National Park is entirely dedicated to the conservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity. It focuses on protecting the fragile ecosystems that populate its shores, from fish-filled seabeds to Mediterranean forests. As a guardian of these natural treasures, it is committed to managing natural resources sustainably while offering educational tours to raise awareness of this nature, which is so important to cherish. All the national park’s activities can be discovered at the Fort du Pradeau museum in Giens.
Botanical Conservatory
The Conservatoire Botanique National Méditerranéen de Porquerolles (CBNMed), part of the Port-Cros National Park, is dedicated to knowledge and assessment of wild flora and natural habitats. Olive trees, fig trees, mulberry trees, wild rose laurel: the botanical conservatory also protects rare and endangered flora.
National park spirit
Inspired by nature, the Esprit Parc National brand allows visitors to disconnect from the hectic pace of everyday life during their stay. It promotes products and services that are committed to preserving and promoting the exceptional areas of national parks. It certifies that the “branded” product or service contributes to the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of these areas.
Our Tourist Office offers four guided tours with the Esprit Parc label: À l’école des chevaliers, Hyères au fil du temps, Histoire du sel, Au pays du sel. Guided tours will be back in 2026.
Rules to adopt
The Port-Cros National Park is a preserved area where nature reigns supreme. When you visit the islands, you become an active participant in protecting their fragile ecosystem: you will not be allowed to camp, you may only smoke cigarettes in the village center, and you may admire the flora but never pick it. At sea, anchoring and diving are regulated. Before your visit, find out about all these important rules so that you can help this Mediterranean gem retain its authenticity for years to come.
