Sightseeing and hiking
Small and totally pedestrianized, the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Les Embiez can be visited all year round. Lined with beaches and coves, their abundant, half-wild, half-cultivated nature is not immediately apparent. Along the dirt and sometimes rocky paths, panoramic views of the sea and the interior of the islands are revealed. Their gentle slopes offer views of the sea, the mainland and sometimes the lagoon (Les Embiez), the Hyères harbor (Porquerolles and Port-Cros), as well as their innermost nature: eucalyptus forest, olive groves (Porquerolles), vineyards (Porquerolles, Les Embiez), anemomorphic pines (Les Embiez), Mediterranean vegetation and oak groves (Port-Cros). On each of these islands, military structures bear witness to their strategic role in France’s history, as part of the country’s maritime defense of the mainland. Military and naval history has also shaped the village of Saint-Mandrier and its peninsula. Beneath their transparent waters, the islands and peninsulas of Provence-Mediterranean hide a fascinating history of military and naval epics.
