She observes it through the lens of emotions, friendships, and the modest aspects of private life: fashion trends, dietary preferences, and concern for ordinary people. She emphasizes that Madame de Sévigné lived in a France where, alongside court ballets, the violence of duels and the Fronde reigned, as did the brutality of revolts and foreign wars, and the intransigence of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. An attractive woman, an “incomparable” mother, a legendary letter-writer, and a keen observer of her time, Madame de Sévigné is portrayed with precision and vitality.
