It was in Rome in 1707 that Handel composed his two great cantatas, "Armida abbandonata" and "La Lucrezia", vast and sensitive portraits of scorned and outraged women, whose strength and absolute character drive them to the brink of madness.
He breathes new life into a historical and mythical figure (Lucretia) with as much heroism as he does into a character from the romances of chivalry (Armide), one of those warrior magicians who fought male heroes on equal terms, but were defeated by their indifference and cowardice in love.
A real tour de force for the performer, these two of Handel's most personal works alternate recitatives in which the character's feelings and pain are felt physically, with arias that are always surprising, poignant, virtuoso or expressionistic.
It takes all the artistry of Karine Deshayes to magically transport us into this highly theatrical universe.
