83000 Toulon
The city of Toulon owes its name to the Celto-Ligurian goddess of gushing springs, Télo, and this is no coincidence.
The Saint Antoine spring at the foot of Fort Rouge, the Las river to the west and the Eygoutier river to the east, as well as the alluvial aquifers, have provided the population of Toulon with drinking water.
This water, harnessed, tamed and channelled, flowed from the city's many fountains.
In the 19th century, Toulon was known as the "city of fountains", with 203 fountains scattered throughout the municipality.
Buffet fountains, drinking fountains, monumental fountains, candelabra fountains and even drinking fountains bear witness to the city's evolution over time and to the creativity of its various architects and artists.
