Vibrant with ardor and sensuality, Abou Lagraa's Carmen eschews tragedy for a dance of love and emancipation.
When Georges Bizet composed this work in 1875, he set his story in the heart of Andalusia. Carmen, the beautiful and bewitching bohemian, wishes to leave the possessive brigadier Don José for the valiant bullfighter Escamillo. But the jealousy of men will cost her her life. Abou Lagraa refuses this fate. In revisiting this play, the artist imagines not one but several Berber Carmens, strong and exhilarating, masters of their own destiny. On a pared-down stage, twelve performers plunge us into this tumultuous story, now traversed by passion and emancipation. Amid sublime lighting effects, they all dance in unison, expressing desire, seduction and the torment of souls.
