Street fights (furious allegro with saber-rattling) and the delights of love (Romeo's passion, Juliet's tenderness) are set in an almost orthodox religious chorale: it's Verona on the Moskova!
Lively and twirling, Ibert's flute babbles in leaps and bounds, flowing in elegy or in light, dapper runs that make Shostakovich's symphony seem oversized. A "composer's response to fair criticism", it strives for intelligibility and optimism. Intended to be Soviet, it turned out to be universal; intended to be positivist, it exudes collective anguish.
On the program:
> Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture
Symphony No.6, Op.74 "Pathétique
> Jacques Ibert, Flute Concerto
