An obsessive, unemployed movie buff, Hossein Sabzian pretends to be the famous filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, whom he resembles. He insinuates himself—ostensibly to direct a film—into a middle-class Iranian family, unable to resist the temptation to manipulate others while pretending to be someone else. Once exposed, the man is brought to trial on charges of fraud. Upon hearing about this news story, director Abbas Kiarostami quickly assembles a film crew to reconstruct the events and film Sabzian’s trial.
