Tour of the Giens peninsula via Carqueiranne - Cycling loop

Hyères

This route around the Giens peninsula is ideal for families, combining paved and dirt roads, passing by beaches, the archaeological site of Olbia, the salt marshes, the Hyères bird sanctuary, La Capte and Toulon airport.

Start and finish at Hyères SNCF train station. From here, head south-east down the Pas du Saunier, a gentle path shared by cyclists and pedestrians. Stop off at the village of La Capte for a stroll and a visit to the beach.

Then follow the Route du Sel, whose traffic is sometimes made difficult by the presence of sand and posidonia blown by the wind onto the cycle path (avoid this on windy days, preferring the gentle route). The "roulotte du sel" runs alongside the salt marshes, the heart of the Hyères bird sanctuary. There's an observation post halfway along the route.

Near the Almanarre beach, you'll reach the Olbia archaeological site, a reminder of the presence of other civilizations in the distant past. Continue along the cycle path to the Château de Carqueiranne, before retracing your steps along the Route de l'Almanarre back to Hyères.
