The Square Clock Tower

Toulon

The Tour de l'horloge, erected within the arsenal, can be seen from the main entrance. It can also be seen from the Avenue de la République, which runs alongside Toulon town hall on the port side.

The pavilion, built on stilts between 1772 and 1775, is topped by a 24m square tower, itself adorned with a clock with a time dial.
The tower's terrace was used by the lookouts in charge of guarding the Arsenal. Above the terrace, nestled at the top of the tower, a bell was encased in a wrought-iron campanile.
At the time, it announced the start and end of work. It rang out the 1914 mobilization and was replaced by a siren in 1918.
Since 1929, the bell has stood on a plinth in front of the clock tower. A false wooden bell has hung from the bell tower since 1954.
