The house of heads
Toulon
Toulon's Maison des Têtes was a five-storey building built in the 18th century and located on the Place à l'Huile. It was so named because of the bronze mascarons adorning the window lintels.
On February 15, 1989, at 2:26 p.m., a violent explosion almost completely destroyed the five stories of the Maison des Têtes, killing 13 people and injuring 32. Rocks and debris were hurled more than 50 meters, shattering windows and storefronts in the surrounding area. The courts concluded that it was a gas explosion, although doubts remain about the cause of the blast.
Since then, a new building has been constructed on the same site, incorporating the original decorative mascarons.
