Since the early 19th century, Chaufourniers have been building kilns and producing lime in the Sabatière and Paradis hills of Carqueiranne.
The association Les Chaufourniers Carqueirannais is busy clearing away and restoring this heritage, a vestige of a bygone era which nevertheless made limestone an enduring part of everyday life in the village. In fact, it's no coincidence that the village's name bears a striking resemblance to the name of this material!
