Panier fountain
This fountain is located on Cours Lafayette, the famous Toulon market sung by Gilbert Bécaud in "Les marchés de Provence". The fountain was sculpted by Monsieur Cival to a design by architect M. Gueit.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1839, replacing the Saint Michel fountain built in 1751 to supply the district and its travelling merchants. On a limestone column with a square base, nearly two meters high, sits a basket overflowing with fruit and vegetables. It resembles a basket of plenty. At the foot of this column, a half-elliptical stone washbasin was installed in 1989, at the request of merchants setting up shop on Cours Lafayette.
