Memorial monument

Toulon

This monument, from which emerges a feeling of austerity, simplicity and gravity, was realized in 1925 by Honoré Sausse, a sculptor born in Toulon. It was inaugurated on June 28th of the same year. It is located at the entrance of the Alexander 1st city garden.

Its composition is original, in the form of a three-level pyramid, preceded by two flights of stairs.
On a rectangular block, the monument presents an alignment of seven Poilus and sailors surmounted by a veiled woman. Leaning against a rectangular block, she extends her arms, protecting the soldiers, in the manner of a medieval Virgin of Mercy. Two laurel waterfalls flow over the edges of the massif. Her left arm holds a shield, making her the allegory of France, saddened by its dead.
