Les fantaisies Toulonnaises
Also known as the "Comédie de Toulon", formerly located on rue de la Comédie. Following the bombardments of the Second World War, the only remains of the theater are its two portals and a staircase leading to the management's apartments.
Toulon's first theater was built in 1765. A few years later, a vestibule and a sculpted portal were added, opening onto the rue de la comédie and now known as the "Fantaisies Toulonnaises".
The most remarkable feature is the carved portal on the former rue de la Comédie. In the center of the entablature, a cartouche bears the inscription "Fantaisies toulonnaises".
Above the door, a medallion adorned with a shell, a child's head and horns of plenty; on either side of the medallion, a group of attributes of Music and Comedy. Among the few surviving monumental entrances in Toulon, this one, because of its program, features an original décor, the only evidence of the city's first theater.
Since February 11, 1998, the gateway has been listed as a historic monument.
