Fountain of the three dolphins

Toulon

Created in 1615, this fountain was initially just a water hydrant. In 1782, it was used as a drinking trough for animals. Now a tourist attraction, the Fountain of the Three Dolphins is located on Place Puget, in the heart of the town center.

Long used as a watering place for horses, goats and sheep, the 3 Dauphins fountain was formerly known as the Fontaine de la Halle aux Grains.

A 7.5 m radius basin is topped by 3 basins. The 3 dolphins (Calissane stone) with intertwined tails adorn the upper part of the fountain. The work is by sculptor Jean Pancrace Chatel.

Considered an oasis between the upper town and the old town, located on Place Puget, surrounded by cafés and restaurants, the fountain is lushly planted with ferns, medlars, laurel and even a fig tree.
