Fountain of the Five Parts of the World
Toulon
This fountain is located on Place Monsenergue, opposite the main entrance to Toulon's arsenal. Built in 1738 in honor of Louis XV.
Carved from a block of marble broken off during the construction of the main gate of Toulon's arsenal. Rather than lose this piece, it was decided in 1740 to keep it and turn it into a fountain.
Unfortunately destroyed by bombing in 1944, it was restored to its original form in 1985.
Originally named Fontaine du Roy, it was renamed in 1920 "Fontaine des cinq parties du monde" (Fountain of the five parts of the world), as it was located near a café frequented by sailors from all five continents and named "Au cinq parties du monde" (The five parts of the world).
