Fountain Dame Sibille

Toulon

Hidden behind Rue de l'Etoile, a monument to calm, this fountain soothes passers-by who come to rest on its stone sculpted in honor of Sibille, the last Lady of Toulon, legendary icon and benefactor of the city.

This woman of high lineage, benefactress of our town, remains a figure shrouded in legend. She had a magnificent tomb erected in memory of her first husband, Gilbert de Baux, in the small cemetery adjoining the original cathedral. In 1660, pious hands collected the epitaph and a few enigmatic stones from this tomb and embedded them in the cathedral facade, where they can still be seen today. In her second marriage, she married Boniface de Castellane, champion of the Provençal struggle against the French, and returned to our town for the rest of her life.
