Dominican Convent

Toulon

After Notre-Dame de la Seds Cathedral, the Dominican Convent is Toulon's oldest religious monument, of which only the portal remains today.

Long known as "Le grand couvent" (the great convent), all that remains of this building is its Gothic portal, behind the Crédit municipal and the Halles. The Friars Preachers, founded by Saint Dominic in 1215, arrived in Toulon shortly before 1261 and occupied three successive locations. They were installed in this district in 1368 by Queen Jeanne, who gave them the former Palais Royal. With its extensive library, the convent had a major cultural influence on the city. During the French Revolution, it was given to the Navy, transformed into barracks in 1808 and finally acquired by the City and demolished in 1885.
