COUVERCLE DE SARCOPHAGES

Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer

Two lids of sarcophagi unearthed in 1816 at the priory of Saint Mandrier and stored at Sainte-Anne Hospital were returned to the town of origin. No registration will however appear on the headstones. Well then difficult to know who was based there...

However, there are no inscriptions on the tombstones. It is therefore difficult to know who was buried there...

They were taken to the hospital in Saint-Mandrier and transferred to the hospital in Sainte-Anne in Toulon when it closed in 1935. Since then, they have rested in the reserves of the Toulon establishment. At the request of the Mandrean municipality, they were returned to their land of origin.
These sarcophagus lids, which date back to the 5th and 6th centuries BC, are the manifestation of the first Mandreans, about whom we know practically nothing, which makes it even more important to show the public the evidence of their presence.
