Fontaine Jeanne

La Valette-du-Var

It is said to have been dug in 1345 by order of Queen Jeanne, Queen of Naples and Countess of Provence, during a brief stay in Valletta.

In place of the Château de Beaudouvin, there was then only a modest sheepfold, the water flowing in a simple stream to irrigate the meadows.
The queen, having been warmly welcomed by the Valettois, wanted to leave a trace of her passage, and this fountain was intended to water the many herds grazing in the surrounding meadows.
The source is thought to have come from the Priory. It empties into the serve des Icards, then into the Foux.
In 1548, the spring was replanted and a gallery built, the first of the communal water mains.
In 1659, the owner of l'Olivette, where the fountain was located (André Beaussier écuyer de Toulon), was sued for possession of the fountain. He lost his case and the fountain became communal property.
The fountain was restored in 1661 and again in 1889.
