Towards accessibility for all

Professionals, become accessible

Making your site or activity accessible is a considerable development challenge for our region, in terms of welcoming and providing hospitality for all visitors: tourists, locals, families with young children, seniors, people with disabilities… everyone can be concerned at some point in their lives.
To date, some 4,000 sites in France have been awarded the Tourisme et Handicap label. Around 80 are in the Var, including 20 in Provence-Méditerranée.

Definition of disability IN THE 2005 law

Art. L 114: “A disability is any limitation of activity or restriction on participation in life in society suffered in his environment by a person because of a substantial, lasting or permanent impairment of one or more physical, sensory, mental, cognitive or psychic functions, a multiple disability or a disabling health disorder.”

Definition of accessibility IN THE 2005 law

Art. R*. 111-19-2: “Any building or installation is considered to be accessible to disabled people if, under normal operating conditions, it enables disabled people to move around, access premises and equipment, use equipment, find their way around, communicate and benefit from the services for which the establishment or installation was designed. Access conditions for disabled people must be the same as those for able-bodied people or, failing that, present an equivalent quality of use.”

territorial accessibility fund

One of the main obstacles to making ERP accessible is the lack of financial assistance available to bring an establishment into compliance with the requirements for accommodating people with disabilities.
In order to encourage and accelerate the process of compliance, a Territorial Accessibility Fund has been set up specifically for 5th category ERP.

Tourism and Handicap label

Managed by Atout France since May 2024, the Tourisme et Handicap label is awarded to tourism professionals wishing to commit to a quality approach to ensure a welcome and leisure activities accessible to all.
Obtaining the Tourisme et Handicap label means responding to the demands of people with disabilities, who want to be able to choose adapted vacations and leisure activities.

The advantages of this approach are :

  • Offer adapted accommodation, services and activities for at least two of these disabilities: motor, visual, auditory and mental.
  • Provide disabled people with reliable, consistent and objective information on the accessibility of tourist sites and facilities.

Who’s the label for?

  • accommodation (hotels, vacation villages, family homes, youth hostels, campsites, furnished tourist accommodation, etc.).
  • food services (restaurants, bars, brasseries, farms, etc.)
  • cultural and leisure sites and activities (monuments, museums, seaside facilities, leisure centers, equestrian centers, hiking trails, etc.).
  • Tourist offices, media libraries

Certification is voluntary and free of charge for professionals. Any tourism professional or service provider wishing to open their establishment or site to customers with disabilities can benefit from the Tourisme et Handicap label, provided their structure complies with the criteria defined by the Tourisme et Handicap label.

For the professional who obtains the label, it’s recognition of the work accomplished and his commitment to offering a range of services and a place that’s suitable for everyone!

Var qualification available

This qualification has been set up by the department since 2012. It recognizes tourism service providers committed to an accessibility approach that meets the requirements of the law of February 5, 2005, for at least one type of disability. It’s a springboard to the “Tourisme et Handicap” label.
The Office de Tourisme Provence Méditerranée is working alongside the Conseil Départemental du Var as part of its partner assessments.
