Remarkable garden of Baudouvin

At the foot of the Coudon slopes, crisscrossed by dry-stone terraces, lies the Baudouvin Garden.

The estate, first mentioned in the 15th century, belonged to Henri de Rothschild in the 1920s and later served as the residence of the Maritime Prefect after the war, until the city acquired priority ownership in 1986. It is now owned by the Toulon Provence Méditerranée Metropolitan Area.

It has preserved the long avenue of plane trees leading to the formal garden surrounding the house and, unusually, the hedge traditionally planted with berry-bearing shrubs to attract songbirds. The ALEP firm, which restored the estate, has highlighted the local market gardening tradition by planting vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens on the wide terraces.

Water from the springs of Mont Coudon feeds the ponds, fountains, and watercourses through a network of channels regulated by weirs.
Baudouvin is a living testament to the art of gardening in Provence.
