The exhibition *Dive(s) into the Unknown* highlights the pivotal role of the Mediterranean coastline in the history of exploring the ocean depths.
From Saint-Raphaël to Marseille, via Hyères and Toulon, this region has been the birthplace of major innovations: Commander Cousteau’s early explorations, the invention of the self-contained diving apparatus, bathyscaphe expeditions, and the rise of recreational diving.
Through works of art, photographs, archaeological artifacts, equipment, models, archives, and films, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the diversity of practices and representations of the underwater world.

It reveals the enduring nature of human activities in the Mediterranean and their evolution, spanning scientific exploration, military applications, and collective imaginations.
Following a chronological timeline, the exhibition traces the major milestones in the history of diving, from the 19th-century “lead-shoe” diving suits to contemporary technologies, such as remotely operated underwater vehicles.

It puts into perspective the technical advances that have enabled humans to push the boundaries of an environment that was long inaccessible.
