To mark the bicentennial of photography, Villa Tamaris presents “200 Years of Portraits!”, a group exhibition featuring more than 300 photographs from the collections of the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie (MPP).

From 19th-century pioneers to leading contemporary photographers, the exhibition traces the evolution of the photographic portrait across eras, styles, and artistic sensibilities. Nadar’s historical portraits—notably those of Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, and Auguste Rodin—are displayed alongside works by Pierre Petit, André Kertész, Denise Colomb, Willy Ronis, Sam Levin, Lucien Clergue, Christine Spengler, Arnaud Baumann, Michel Séméniako, Patrick Zachmann, and Studio Harcourt.

From posed portraits to freer, more contemporary approaches, each photograph offers a unique way of capturing a presence, an expression, or an identity. This dialogue between generations weaves a living history of the portrait, enriched by historical photographs and works never before exhibited.

A journey through 200 years of images and perspectives, at the heart of an exceptional photographic heritage preserved by the MPP.
